Panama Canal, Miraflores Locks

DSC03661

One might think that Panama Canal is just a long hole in the continent. The truth is little bit more complicated, the way to the other ocean leads through lake Gatun, which is located 26 metres above the sea level. Thanks to clever locks system, ships can be lifted or lowered to desired elevation. Due to gravity, whole procedure can be accomplished without pumps.
