Tegucigalpa, the Capital City of Honduras: With a Visit in the Most Dangerous City (Ok, Almost):

DSC01928

According to this ranking, the capital of Honduras is fourth most dangerous city in the world. The report compares number of homicides per 100,000 citizens. When I went through the list of 50 most dangerous cities I found out that I also went to New Orleans, Oakland, Guatemala City and San Salvador.

When I saw similar ranking few years ago I said to myself that I’m not going to visit those places. After reading such report you imagine the place is so unsafe that it’s is impossible to have a walk without being robbed. I thought the same about whole Mexico, but during my travels in Latin America I changed my mind.

So how was Tegucigalpa? I spent a weekend there and didn’t see anything that concerned me. Common sense, avoiding bad neighbourhoods, taking care of yourself after dark and a hotel in a good spot is all. Also the rumour is that the most of the violence is caused by gangs fighting each other. And those are the basics rules of staying safe in Central America.

I’m sure about one thing: Tegucigalpa is one of the sleaziest cities I’ve visited. Poverty and crime goes together really well. You can see some of those sights below.
